Over the past several years, full, pouty lips have become a coveted feature in the world of aesthetic treatments. Luscious and youthful lips have always been in style, and there has never been a better time to receive lip treatment.

A lip flip procedure is a great way to increase the visibility of the upper lip in a totally natural-looking way.

What is a Lip Flip procedure?

A Lip Flip procedure utilizes neurotoxin injections to relax the upper lip and make it more visible when in a contracted state. These neurotoxin injections target the orbicularis oris muscle (the muscle that is responsible for movement of the mouth and lips) and relax the muscles above the upper lip. By focusing on this muscle, the lip is freed to appear more voluminous and contoured.

It is important to keep in mind that a lip flip procedure does not increase volume in the lip but frees it to appear more visible through an entirely different process.

There are various types of neurotoxins available that can be used for a lip flip. Some of the most popular brands are Botox, Xeomin, Jeaveua, and Dysport.

What are the benefits of Lip Flip procedure?

  • More cost-effective than lip fillers
  • A subtle change to the lips rather than a dramatic one
  • A fuller-looking upper lip
  • Minimal downtime
  • Results show up only a few days after the procedure

Who is an ideal candidate?

Generally speaking, good candidates for this procedure are healthy individuals who have naturally full lips but find that they are not visible when smiling. Beyond that, ideal candidates are people who are looking to achieve a subtle but more pronounced pout. Above all, the most important point to remember is that a Lip Flip procedure does not increase the actual volume of the lips. It only has the ability to reveal the volume that is already there.

What does the procedure entail?

Before starting the procedure, the patient’s health history is assessed to check for allergies, medical conditions, or issues that may have an adverse effect on treatment. Overall, it is usually a fast procedure with minimal pain and is considered to be less invasive than other options.

Patients are asked not to wear any makeup (at the very least, not any lipstick) so that before and after photos are accurate and that the lips remain sterile. The majority of patients find the procedure to be painless, as a topical anesthetic will be applied to ensure thorough numbing. The injection process itself typically lasts about 10 minutes.

What is the recovery like?

There is essentially no downtime with lip flips, and patients can return to their daily routines as soon as they step out of the office! It is common, however, for patients' lips to feel numb for a short period of time, making them unable to eat or drink properly. While this is a potential side effect and could mean downtime, it only occurs in instances where too much neurotoxin has been administered to the orbicularis oris muscle.
