In recent years, full, luscious-looking lips have become increasingly popular amongst women. Unfortunately, some people are not blessed with the genetics that creates such conditions. When people start aging, the appearance of the lips may get even farther from this goal. The mouth corners may start to sag as the upper lip loses its youthful plumpness.

Lip augmentation is an excellent treatment for achieving the fullness that patients are seeking. Lip augmentation procedures consist of a variety of treatment options that each employ different methods. The invasiveness of the procedure will depend on which method the patient selects.

What is a Lip Flip procedure?

A Lip Flip procedure utilizes neurotoxin injections to relax the upper lip and make it more visible when in a contracted state. These neurotoxin injections target the orbicularis oris muscle (the muscle that is responsible for movement of the mouth and lips) and relax the muscles above the upper lip. By focusing on this muscle, the lip is freed to appear more voluminous and contoured.

It is important to keep in mind that a lip flip procedure does not increase volume in the lip but frees it to appear more visible through an entirely different process.

There are various types of neurotoxins available that can be used for a lip flip. Some of the most popular brands are Botox, Xeomin, Jeaveua, and Dysport.

The types of Lip Augmentation?

Hyaluronic acid dermal filler injections

There are two primary types of dermal fillers that are formulated for lip augmentation. The most popular among them are Juvéderm Ultra XC, Juvéderm Vollure, and Revanesse Versa, which are all based on Hyaluronic acid. A naturally occurring sugar in the body, hyaluronic acid aids cells in retaining their moisture and shape, making it a good product for lips.

The results from hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can last for up to a year or longer.

Collagen dermal filler injections

Collagen-based dermal fillers are another popular option for lip augmentation. A natural protein found in the body, collagen lasts longer, but it requires time to settle in and develop following the injection. While the final outcome from collagen injections can last up to 5 years, those results take a few weeks to show up.

Fat grafting

Also known as fat transfer, fat grafting has rapidly grown in popularity in recent years due to the fact that it’s all-natural. There are no synthetic fillers, foreign collagen, or PMMA/acrylic particles. The only thing needed is the patient’s own fat.

For this procedure, liposuction is employed to harvest a small amount of fat from some other part of the body. This fat is then purified and injected into the target area. Results from this treatment can last for several years.

Renuva injections

Renuva is an injectable that is made from an allograft adipose matrix derived from natural human fat. It stimulates the patient’s own fat cells, causing them to fluff up. The results are very long-lasting.

Patients notice a visible difference almost immediately following the procedure. The results gradually improve over the following months. Renuva comes ready to inject once it is rehydrated in the syringe. Thus, there is no need for invasive liposuction and processing that are employed in traditional fat grafting procedures.

What are the benefits of Lip Augmentation?

  • Defined shape
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Results that look natural
  • Customizable results for different levels of enhancement
  • No recovery time

Who is an ideal candidate for Lip Augmentation?

The ideal candidates for lip fillers are people who want to enhance or revitalize the mouth area. Many aspire to have more luscious lips in order to highlight their natural features. While lip augmentation has traditionally been sought out by women, more and more men are now becoming interested in the treatment.

Other criteria for determining candidacy include:

  • No uncontrolled diabetes
  • No blood diseases
  • No herpes or cold sores
  • No medications or allergies that may affect the procedure
  • Nonsmoking
  • Asymmetrical lips
  • Wrinkling around the lips

Above all, it is important that patients have realistic expectations for the outcomes of the procedure. Patients’ candidacy will be assessed during the consultation.
