Many people find that over the course of their lifetime, their skin starts to sag. This can either be due to rapid weight loss or, more commonly, aging. In either case, the appearance of saggy skin can be upsetting. Fortunately, modern plastic surgery offers a solution to this problem. A body lift performed by Dr. Lewis can help jumpstart your self-confidence and offer you a whole new world of wardrobe options.

What is a Body Lift?

A body lift is a procedure that aims to contour and firm loose skin that may appear on multiple parts of the body. The main areas of focus are typically the buttocks, stomach, arms, and breasts. When skin loses its elasticity, it will not rebound and appear ‘tight.’ Using techniques such as skin excision, fat excision, and liposuction, surgeons are able to smooth out problem areas, revitalizing the patient’s appearance.

What procedures does a body lift include?

A body lift is usually comprised of three different operations:

  • Tummy tuck: Abdominoplasty is a procedure that involves removing excess skin and fat from the belly and tightening the skin. It can help strengthen a weak lower abdominal wall.
  • Buttock lift: A buttock lift involves making an incision along the upper edge of the buttocks, removing the excess skin, and creating tighter contours. It is sometimes combined with fat transfer for those that want to add roundness and voluptuousness to the backside.
  • Panniculectomy: A panniculectomy is almost the same thing as a tummy tuck. The main difference is that during a panniculectomy, the abdominal muscles are not tightened. All the focus is on removing the excess, apron-like skin that hangs down over the groin, causing irritation and chafing.

If the individual in question has a higher volume of excess skin throughout the body, a full-body lift may be required to tend to all of the areas. The full-body lift is a considerably complex procedure and is usually carried out in a series of sessions.

What are the benefits of a body lift?

For anybody suffering from sagging skin, this procedure can be life-changing. It can give patients a whole new level of confidence in themselves. It can also alleviate many of the symptoms that individuals with loose skin tend to experience, such as rashes and sores. Simple tasks such as finding clothes that fit comfortably will no longer be a source of anxiety.

Who makes a good candidate for a body lift?

An ideal candidate for a body lift is in good health, both physically and mentally. As with any procedure, the likelihood of developing side effects is greatly affected by the patient’s condition. Those committed to a healthy lifestyle of eating right and exercising regularly are in the best position to take on this endeavor. Having a positive outlook and realistic expectations is also imperative.

What will my recovery entail?

Following the procedure, patients are often asked to stay in the hospital for one to two nights. There is often discomfort and swelling, but good pain medication will help manage these symptoms. Like any other cosmetic surgery, recovering patients need to avoid strenuous activities for 4-6 weeks. Many patients are given a compressive garment, such as a girdle to support and reduce swelling. It can take up to 3 months for the swelling to dissipate entirely and up to two years for the final results to appear.
